Katja Bühler graduated in Mathematics at University of Karlsruhe in 1996 and received a PhD in Technical Sciences (Computer Science) from Vienna University of Technology in 2001 where she worked as assistant professor at the Institute for Computer Graphics and Algorithms from 1998-2002. She continued her career in 2002 as senior researcher at VRVis and as external lecturer at Vienna University of Technology. In 2003 she became head of the Biomedical Visualization Group at VRVis and coordinates since 2010 the Research Area Visualization. Katja Bühler has many years of experience in leading international applied research projects in close cooperation with industry and academia and deepened her knowledge in Strategic R&D Management in 2010 at INSEAD. She serves as IPC member and reviewer for various international conferences and journals and is active member of international societies. She is part of the steering committee „GI Fachgruppe Visual Computing in der Medizin“ and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of CURAC. She acts as expert reviewer for several international funding agencies and the European Union.

Interests:

Current and accomplished research topics of Katja Bühler and members of the Biomedical Visualization Group focus on automatic image analysis and visualization for computer supported diagnosis, the development of automatic classification methods for microscopic images of cell cultures, the development of systems for computer aided neurosurgery including the task specific visualization of multi-modal data, as well as organization, visualization, interactive visual exploration and data mining of large data bases and related collections of annotated 3D images of neural circuits of the fruit fly.

Teaching:

Katja Bühler teaches Medical Visualization at Vienna University of Technology and gave guest lectures for medical doctors, radiologists and image scientists at Medical University of Vienna, Donau University Krems, the University for Applied Sciences Vienna and the Universidad de las Sciencias Informatics, Havanna, Cuba.
