| Computer-assisted planning of ENT surgery: research and product development — | |
|---|---|
| Surgical interventions in Ear-, Nose-, Throat surgery are challenging due to the high density of critical anatomic structures. Examples are neck dissections, where lymph node metastasis are removed, often close to major blood vessels, and sinus surgery where extended interventions often reach close to the optic nerve. A wide spectrum of diagnostic facilities, such as CT, MRI, ultrasound and endoscopy is preoperatively used for precise diagnosis, tumor staging and treatment planning. Interdisciplinary discussions, e.g. between experts for radiation treatment planning, surgeons and internists have to be supported. Computer-support, in particular carefully chosen 3D visualizations may enhance this process provided that careful sequences of appropriate visualizations are generated which directly support treatment questions, such as evaluation of a potential infiltration. In product development, more complex issues have to be solved, such as the creation of appealing interfaces which support specific workflows, the dedicate support of documentation and adequate support for different clinical settings. | Invited Talk (40 min) |
