MetropoVis

A visual information system for urban areas is currently being developed. Input data from maps, aerial photographs, cadastral data and meta data will be combined in a virtual model. The model can be used for planning, training and information purposes

The goal of the MetropoVis project is to develop a powerful tool for city departments, urban planers and any other person who needs to work with different data sources from urban areas. The project team consist of 10 members from Austria and Slovakia. The project is funded through the STRAPAMO funding scheme of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor (BMWA) and supported by the FFG-Area 3. As two city departments (Magistrat 41 of Vienna and Magistrat Bratislava) are partners of the team, important feedback on the usability of the project will be provided. The two main research parts are the development of a 3D viewer that allows the interactive, real-time viewing of very large datasets (as it is common in larger cities) and the development of a data-base where the different data sources can be managed. The system can be used for different purposes including city planning, informing local citizens about plans, planning security for large events, offering tourists the possibility to virtually walk through the city and visualizing trees. The ability to walk or fly over a large city in real time will be made possible through the viewer, developed by VRVis.
