Severe Weather Explorer

The project Severe Weather Explorer allows an interactive visual 3D analysis of meteorological fields (data). Next to the analysis it enables the 3D visualization of radar- and simulation data as well as a joint visualization of different data-sources in one geo-referenced modell. Furthermore algorithms have been implemented in the system which allow a semi-automatic detection of specific weather phenomena (for example hail).

Currently data from many different sources is used to establish weather forecasts. Each of these sources has its own visualization. Three dimensional data of the atmosphere is normally depicted in two dimensions. This makes it much harder to have a merged view on the data and a collaborate view can only be achieved with much strain. This leads to crucial delays especially when forecasting extrem events like thunderstorms.

Because of Severe Weather Explorer weather forecasts can be made faster and more precise. At the same time meteorological personnel achieves a faster overview and are developing more understanding for complex weather systems.
