For many years, the FEMtech initiative of the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) has honored outstanding women in research and innovation. In September 2021, VRVis researcher Johanna Schmidt, head of the Visual Analytics group, receives the honor to be recognized by the FEMtech jury as a leading expert in her field.
Johanna Schmidt studied computer science at the Vienna University of Technology with a focus on visual computing. She received her Master's degree in 2011 and subsequently completed her PhD in Visualization at TU Wien, graduating in 2016. She has been part of VRVis since 2019, where she became head of the Visual Analytics group in July 2020. Johanna Schmidt is an expert in information visualization and visual analysis of large time series data, but also does research on data literacy (the human competence to read data correctly). She works with interactive visual systems that support tasks such as data quality assessment, decision making, and predictive modeling. She is author and co-author of many scientific publications, in one of her most recent publication she analyzed meteorological data to improve climate prediction models. In addition, Johanna Schmidt is a lecturer at TU Wien and is a founding member of the Austrian chapter of IEEE Women in Engineering, where she is very active in promoting young female researchers.
