Eva Mayr, Universität für Weiterbildung Krems: Visual Models, Data Models & Mental Models Abstract: In visualization projects, the focus is often on the conversion of data (models) into suitable visual models. However, the mental models of the users play an equally important role. This talk uses examples to highlight the importance of the fit between external and internal models.
Wolfgang Aigner, FH St. Pölten: Visualization Literacy & Onboarding Abstract: Visualisation literacy refers to the ability to extract information and gain insights from data visualisations in an effective, efficient and confident way. However, most users of such tools are not experienced in visual data analysis and are not able to take full advantage of the opportunities for data-driven technologies. Thus, users must learn how to interpret the visually encoded information. Visualization onboarding methods aim to support users in closing these knowledge gaps effectively and range from step-by-step guides to explanation videos, learning environments, or data comics.
Manuela Waldner, TU Wien: Mixed Methods Visualization Research Abstract: To validate visual encoding and interaction design, researchers mostly rely on quantitative measures of human performance in controlled user studies. In this short talk, I will outline how qualitative methods can be integrated in a controlled study setting and why they can considerably increase the study's value.
