Visdom: the world's fastest hydrodynamic simulation technology
Together with VRVis, Cologne Municipal Drainage Works (Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln) has dedicated itself to solving precisely this question. For a decade, the experts have been researching the Visdom simulation software and developed the world's fastest flood simulator technology. Thanks to state-of-the-art computing power, the most accurate mathematical models and high-resolution terrain models, it is now possible to run highly accurate hydrodynamic simulations that show in clear images how fast a flood can spread and what damage it can cause. This is all important information that can save lives and protect property in the event of an catastrophe. The Visdom software is an interactive, digital tool for flood and heavy rain disaster prevention that can be used to plan various protective measures.
Cologne focuses on information and precautions in the fight against heavy rain
One of the central precautionary and protective measures for the population of Cologne is a heavy rain hazard map. This map was created with Visdom and is available free of charge on the Internet (Cologne heavy rain hazard map). The heavy rain hazard map shows the risk of flash floods and heavy rainfall. With the help of these maps, citizens can quickly and easily check online whether their place of residence is at risk. In addition to the flood risk, it is also possible to read how high the floodwater could become in the event of a flood. For this purpose, current precipitation data and topographical elevation data are taken into account, on the basis of which a digital terrain model of the Cologne and Rheine region has been recreated. In addition, the infiltration capacity of the soil is also taken into account, i.e. how quickly the soil can absorb the water.
The Cologne region is particularly at risk of flooding from heavy rainfall. The heavy rain hazard map is therefore another important tool in a large bundle of measures that the Cologne Municipal Drainage Works (StEB Köln) makes available to its citizens. Thanks to the online maps, the people of Cologne can quickly find out their individual hazard situation and take the necessary steps and precautions.
