Visual computing is a cross-sectional technology that translates data into comprehensible information and images and is used in many industries. The result are digital tools from the fields of image informatics, visual analytics, simulation, artificial intelligence, or virtual & augmented reality, which open up significant technological potential for science and industry. To bring this much-used but popularly still little-known technology to the forefront, the Viennese research center VRVis Zentrum für Virtual Reality und Visualisierung announces the first Europe-wide "VRVis Visual Computing Award". The prize includes a € 5,000 prize money.
With the first "VRVis Visual Computing Award", VRVis is highlighting outstanding research work that uses visual computing to create sustainable solutions in line with the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Katja Bühler, scientific director of VRVis: "Visual Computing makes data tangible, understandable, and usable for humans by combining visualization, interaction, automatic analysis, and simulation, and is considered one of the key technologies for the implementation of human-centered digitalization. With this award we want to showcase the potential of visual computing to achieve the global development goals to a broad public." The focus is not only on measures for more climate protection but much more, knows Gerd Hesina, Managing Director of VRVis: "Visual computing is already contributing to making infrastructure more resilient, social life more inclusive, or medical applications more trustworthy. For many years, Austria plays an important role in the European research landscape by building bridges to the future with visual computing. It' s time to draw more attention to this contribution."

About the Award
The focus of the award is on researchers who make a contribution to a sustainable future with their application-oriented projects. Self-applications as well as proposals from suitable persons are possible until September 30, 2022. The award will be presented at the symposium "Visual Computing Trends" on January 26, 2023 in Vienna.
