Of Stones and Stars - Virtual Archaeoastronomy with Stellarium
Abstract: Since the earliest days of humankind, the sky and its phenomena have provided orientation in time and space. Archaeologically documented and excavated remains often (but not always!) show orientation patterns (building axes, windows, corridors, ...) which can be explained with celestial phenomena like solstitial sunrises. Even medieval churches have usually been orientated towards particular sunrise dates in the East.
This presentation provides an overview and worldwide application of virtual archaeoastronomy, with examples from Neolithic remains in Lower Austria, Stonehenge, Malta, Roman Italy, Peru, and even modern Tibet, and how land- and skyscapes of the past can only be studied with modern computer-based methods.
