The World Summit Awards (WSA) recognise innovative digital and technological applications with social value. With his interactive multimedia guide, VRVis researcher Andreas Reichinger has already won one of the WSA Austria awards in 2023. Moreover, he is currently on the shortlist for the global WSA in the category "Culture & Heritage".
Barrier-free art experience using different senses
The interactive multimedia guide is a supplement to the tactile reliefs that VRVis creates on the basis of photos or 3D scans of exhibits. These reliefs enable people with visual or cognitive impairments, as well as older people and children, to touch museum objects and thus explore them independently and intuitively.
The multimedia guide combines touch, hearing and vision. It provides users with multimedia content on the tactile reliefs, including audio files, animations, specific colour projections and videos in sign language. They can engage with the objects at their own pace and in line with their needs. These features make the interactive Multimedia Guide an effective and highly creative tool for the barrier-free communication of art and culture.
Longstanding expertise in inclusive digitization
For over ten years, Andreas Reichinger of VRVis has been working on digital solutions that make museum attractions and programms more inclusive. The multimedia guide and tactile reliefs add value for all visitors by providing variable options to interact and approach exhibits. Researcher Andreas Reichinger has already won several prizes for his developments, e.g. the IIID Award or the UD Award.
Facilitating access to culture for older people
As part of the EU BeauCoup project, the Multimedia Guide system is currently expanded and specifically orientated to the needs of older people. Together with various European partner institutions, VRVis aims to bring seniors into contact with art and culture more easily, also outside of an institutional context.
