The ICT Austria Jewels honor innovations in information and communication technology designed to make life more sustainable. The project SMAIL by VRVis, Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA), EOX IT Services GmbH and the Department of Geoinformatics - Z_GIS at Paris Lodron University Salzburg is among this year's winners of the award.
AI-optimized visualizations for a future-oriented, digital agriculture
SMAIL aims to ensure that also small, rugged agricultural areas can be mapped and analyzed in sufficient quality via remote sensing. Super-Resolution Reconstruction (SRR) provides the basis for this. Using AI, this technology optimizes unsatisfactory images of small landscape structures that can be obtained from satellite data. Comprehensive digital spatial monitoring helps to ensure that measures for climate protection and the preservation of biodiversity can be developed and implemented in a tailored manner. At the same time, the use of agricultural land can be more easily reviewed through SMAIL, making the industry significantly more digital and viable.
Research funding for AI technology to achieve sustainable solutions
FFG is funding SMAIL as part of the "AI for Green" program. AI can contribute profoundly to overcoming ecological challenges. Research projects in this field facilitate climate change adaptation and create the basis for solution-oriented decisions in agriculture and forestry, in the energy sector or for disaster management.
