Run, Spider, Run: How to build an Endless Virtual Environment for Arachnids
Abstract: Axel Schmid of the Dept. Neurobiology, University of Vienna studied the visual systems and visually guided behavior of hunting spiders:
Spiders react to different contrasts, mainly vertical shadows (“trees”): does color play a role?
How do they react to distortions between stimulus and response: if the spider turns 90°, but the environment less or more, how does the spider react?
Lots of different configurations to test the 3D perception: spiders use motion parallax for depth perception, the environment should be able to manipulate this, too.
For this, we built him a virtual environment for behavioral research of hunting spiders, in which the spider have 360° field of view and can run endlessly in any direction.
