Connecting the science and practice of visualization, promoting collaboration, and attracting more researchers to this discipline in Europe: These are the main goals of the EuroVis conferences. From June 12 to 16, 2023, this year´s edition took place in Leipzig's Wissenschaftspark. All fields of visualization were represented there to show how rapidly and strongly the discipline is developing.
Capstone talk by Katja Bühler on the development of successful, application-oriented software frameworks
On the first day of the conference, the scientific director of VRVis, Katja Bühler, presented her capstone talk "From tiny brains through raging rivers to Mars - the winding path from research prototypes to mature and sustainable software frameworks" in the session of the VisGap Symposium. In her talk, she spoke about the challenges of developing software prototypes from research to mature software solutions or products. Katja Bühler reflected on some examples from VRVis that have grown from an idea into a prototype, and now exist as an actively used software base. This presentation was part of VisGap at EuroVis 2023, which mainly focused on the gap between visualization research and practical applicability. It emphasized different approaches to solve this problem in an exchange between the two domains.
Paper, Panel Participation and Chair in a Session on Visual Analytics (VA)
Johanna Schmidt, head of the research group on visual analytics at VRVis, participated in a panel on interactive data analytics on June 14, 2023. With the other participants, she discussed research trends and ongoing changes in the field. Together with researchers from Visplore GmbH, a spin-off of VRVis, Johanna Schmidt also presented a paper at the EuroVis conference: Entitled "Human-Based and Automatic Feature Ideation for Time Series Data: A Comparative Study," they addressed the requirements for human-generated features for VA applications and outline characteristics for a quality assessment of feature sets. Johanna Schmidt also chaired a session on visual analytics and perception.
