This year's SIGGRAPH conference took place exclusively virtually at the end of August, but as every year it brought together the latest innovations and experts in the field of computer graphics from all over the world.
In his talk "Integrated Simulation and Visualization for Flood Management" within the session "Game Technology in Engineering, Science and Society" Daniel Cornel gave a detailed introduction into how the simulation software Visdom uses rendering and visualization to enable realistic flood simulations including interactive operations. As Visdom's rendering and interaction uses several game technologies, Daniel Cornel, as lead rendering developer of Visdom, focused on the similarities and differences between scientific and gaming software. Thereby it became very clear how useful an exchange between research and the gaming scene is: The methods developed in Visdom can also be used in game development, for example to make water simulations more realistic.
Daniel Cornel also spoke about the topic of gaming technology in areas other than entertainment together with experts from various disciplines in the SIGGRAPH Spotlight Podcast "Game on".
