Dipl.-Math.in Dr.in Katja Bühler

Katja Bühler graduated in Mathematics at University of Karlsruhe in 1996 and received a PhD in Technical Sciences (Computer Science) from Vienna University of Technology in 2001, where she worked as assistant professor at the Institute for Computer Graphics and Algorithms from 1998-2002. She continued her career in 2002 as senior researcher at VRVis and as external lecturer at Vienna University of Technology. In 2003 she became head of the Biomedical Image Informatics Group at VRVis and coordinates since 2010 the Research Area Visualization. Katja Bühler has many years of experience in leading international applied research projects in close cooperation with industry and academia and deepened her knowledge in Strategic R&D Management in 2010 at INSEAD.
In 2012 Katja Bühler and Rainer Wegenkittl received the Austrian science2business award for the management of a successful long term research project with AGFA Healthcare.
She serves as chair, IPC member and reviewer for various international conferences and journals and is active member of international societies. She is part of the steering committee „GI Fachgruppe Visual Computing in der Medizin“ and EG VCBM. She is member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the french research infrastructur Tefor.net and CURAC (2012-2014) and acts as expert reviewer for several international funding agencies, the European Union and for PhD theses at international level.

Interests
Katja Bühler’s scientific roots are in reliable computing and numerics, geometry processing and visualization. Since 2003 she and her team are dedicated to develop highly efficient methods to provide access to information encoded in biomedical images. Her group ameliorates expertise in image processing, machine learning, high performance computing, data mining, visualization and human computer interaction to novel visual computing solutions for medicine and life science. Research results of the group have been awarded by numerous scientific awards and resulted in several patents. The highly successful software emerged from the groups research results helps radiologists, radiotherapists and surgeons to cope with muti-modal images and diagnostic tasks in their daily clinical routine. The e-science platform Brain* addresses the urgent need to manage and exploit image intense data collections and accelerates image based research of neuroscientists.

Teaching
Katja Bühler taught Medical Visualization at Vienna University of Technology from 2001-2012 and the University for Applied Sciences Vienna. She gives regularily guest lectures for medical doctors, radiologists and image scientists at Medical University of Vienna, Donau University Krems and the Universidad de las Sciencias Informatics, Havanna, Cuba. She also supervised numerous Diploma and PhD Students in cooperation with national and international universities like the Vienna University of Technology, University Koblenz and Hochschule der Künste Zürich.
